What She Wore: Oscars Spotlight Pakistan's Designers

She is an intelligent and insightful film maker, whose efforts go into bringing light to the issues within the Pakistani society and yet she continues to elevate impressions of her country in the eyes of the world. She is seriously focused and has a very journalistic approach in highlighting the disturbing topics she deals within her films. Her representation by the Pakistani designers on Oscars was extremely gaudy and totally overshadowed her very personality that we see through her films. Wearing an outfit and jewelry by Pakistani designer is in itself a promotion of Pakistan and its growing fashion industry. The dangling flag on the bracelet and over done embroidery on a hybrid outfit was screaming out loud ‘Look at me I am Pakistan’. The Oscars did not need that as her films are already doing that job. I wish her designers had also taken her films and her personality into consideration before imposing their own idea of ‘sharmeen obaid’ on the stage. Her radiant face and her brief speech was a beauty untouched by the glitter that surrounded her.
